Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick for the visitors, the first time since Jermain Defoe in 2016 a Black Cats player has netted three goals in a Premier League game, with the visitors levelling the scores at 1-1 and 2-2 before reducing the deficit to 4-3.
An acrobatic goalline clearance from Rúben Dias maintained City’s lead in the second half, before Haaland scored his first ever goal against Sunderland to make it 5-3, the Black Cats falling short of a famous result at the Etihad Stadium.
