Long-time bouncer of Glasgow nightclub The Garage, Ajaz Majid, has died "suddenly and unexpectedly" at the age of 48, his family have confirmed.

Tributes are pouring in for the beloved club steward, known endearingly as Jaz, who’s remembered as "one of the friendliest, most courteous, and most lovable people you could care to meet".

"On behalf of Jaz’s family, we at The Garage are raising funds to help cover the costs of funeral arrangements after the sudden passing of our friend and close colleague Jaz Majid," The Garage shared on Instagram yesterday (May 20).

While his cause of death has not been confirmed, Glasgow Live reports that Jaz was confirmed to have passed away on Saturday, May 16, after worries that he had not shown up for work.

Jaz spent over 12 years working with the legendary Glasgow club, which opened in 1994 on Sauchiehall Street. Commenters on Glasgow Live's Facebook post also highlighted that Jaz was a "legend" at The Arches in the naughties.

He’s described by the venue as a "giant of a man with a big heart", who was known by many amongst Glasgow’s nightlife community.

A fundraiser has been set up to support his family with funeral costs, and has so far raised more than £2,500 of a £5,000 goal.

In a tribute shared on Facebook , The Garage’s owner, Donald Macleod, said he was "saddened and gutted" to hear about Jaz’s passing.

"He was one of the friendliest, most courteous, affable and indeed lovable people you could ever meet," he wrote. "A tragic loss to all those who knew or worked with him."

"My deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy goes to Jazz’s family, friends, workmates, clubbers and all who grieve his passing," he added.
