Ukrainian-born concert violinist and composer Sergiy Bolotny presents a unique combination of Dutch musical heritage and classical virtuosity in his latest release, "Little Dutch Rhapsody No. 3 Capriccio Amsterdam." The new solo violin piece is based on Pieter Goemans's classic composition, "Aan de Amsterdamse grachten." Bolotny puts the violin in the spotlight and lets the instrument's emotional character lead, rather than relying on complex production.

The repertoire of Capriccio Amsterdam is inspired by the old-Viennese violin tradition of Fritz Kreisler, in which lyrical passages are interspersed with sprightly and technically demanding variations. Bolotny's phrasing gives the piece melodic warmth, and rich double-stops add depth and fullness to the solo. These playful shifts add motion and character, creating a listening experience that is both refined and lively.

The recording adds more muscle to the release, and the room's natural resonance retains the violin's warmth and true sound, bringing the listener closer to the instrument without unnecessary production effects. This decision aligns with the piece's classical underpinnings, preserving its textures and expressive details throughout.

As Assistant Second Concertmaster of the Noord Nederlands Orkest, Bolotny debuted this release on release day on Dutch national public radio, NPO Klassiek, alongside works by Maurice Ravel and Nino Rota, situating the piece in a broader classical-music conversation. "Little Dutch Rhapsody No. 3 Capriccio Amsterdam" is an intriguing solo violin piece that combines musical tradition, technical skill, and an Amsterdam-inspired spirit.
