Tottenham have agreed an £85m deal to sign midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. The fee shatters Tottenham's previous transfer record of £65m paid for Dominic Solanke in 2024. Manchester United were unwilling to match the £85m valuation, allowing Tottenham to secure a player they aggressively pursued after missing key targets last summer.
The transaction highlights a stark financial dynamic within English football. Despite West Ham preparing for their first season outside the Premier League since 2011/12, the club retains the ability to extract record-breaking fees from top-tier rivals. Relegation has not triggered a wholesale devaluation of the squad's market value.
West Ham is similarly resisting pressure to offload other core assets. Captain Jarrod Bowen, who is contracted until June 2030, is the subject of interest from several Premier League clubs. However, West Ham has established a firm position that he is not for sale, and no asking price has been communicated to interested parties.
To navigate the transfer window, the club has overhauled its recruitment operations. Nils Koppen has been appointed as the new director of player recruitment, arriving from his role as technical director at FC Copenhagen. A West Ham statement confirmed Koppen was "tasked with identifying and recruiting the players needed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League."
Koppen's arrival is expected to accelerate incoming transfer activity. West Ham hold an early interest in Everton winger Dwight McNeil, but progress is paused until the new director aligns his strategy with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. The club has already completed Nuno's backroom staff by appointing Rui Pedro Silva as an assistant coach.
Outgoing transfer interest remains a significant factor in West Ham's summer planning. Manchester United have held exploratory talks regarding winger Crysencio Summerville. Defender Dinos Mavropanos is also drawing attention from Premier League sides and European clubs, including Arsenal.
The club must also manage an immediate injury concern. Tomas Soucek suffered ankle ligament damage during the Czech Republic's World Cup campaign and is returning to London for assessment. West Ham will open their Championship season away at Burnley on August 16.
