Elanga strike secures Sweden's World Cup knockout spot
Anthony Elanga's second-half equaliser secured Sweden a place in the World Cup knockout stages, but the team's reliance on the Newcastle winger masks underlying attacking issues ahead of a likely clash with France or Norway.
Sweden drew 1-1 with Japan in front of 70,137 fans at Dallas Stadium to finish third in Group F and advance to the round of 32. Anthony Elanga curled in a left-footed equaliser in the 62nd minute after Daizen Maeda put Japan ahead seven minutes prior.
The result guarantees three teams with points advance from the group, dealing a final blow to Scotland. For Sweden, the achievement represents a significant moment for national morale, completing a remarkable recovery from October when the side sat bottom of its qualifying group under Jon Dahl Tomasson.
Graham Potter has steadied the ship since taking over, yet his team has looked vulnerable against competent opposition. A dull first half gave way to a second period where Japan's intricate play exposed Swedish defensive frailties before Elanga intervened.
The draw masks a growing concern surrounding the team's forward line. Viktor Gyokeres cut a frustrated figure, registering just one ineffective shot and picking up a booking. Alexander Isak showed flashes of sharpness but relied on a Japanese mistake and a set-piece for his two best chances.
Isak was denied by Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the 65th minute and later hit the bar from a corner. Suzuki also saved Elanga's stoppage-time drive, while Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom made a crucial first-half stop to deny Keito Nakamura.
"Credit to the players, they stood up as they always have done. They have been so honest and so great in that regard. We played against another tough team, it was a tough game," Potter said. "Going a goal down, we stuck at it and delighted for Anthony because he's been amazing off the pitch - now he's got two goals."
Sweden will now likely face the Group I winners, France or Norway, in New Jersey on 30 June. Japan finished second to set up a meeting with Brazil in Houston on 29 June, while group winners the Netherlands face Morocco on 30 June.
Elanga's form provides a genuine counter-attacking threat for the knockout phase. However, if Sweden's highly rated strikers cannot convert chances against top-tier European opposition, this resurgence may end abruptly.
