England's James misses Panama match as Tuchel faces selection questions
Reece James will miss England's final group game against Panama, exposing the risks of Thomas Tuchel's decision to bring just three recognised full-backs to the World Cup.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Reece James will not travel to New Jersey for Saturday's final Group L match against Panama. The Chelsea defender complained of a hamstring issue following Tuesday's goalless draw against Ghana and has not trained for the last two days.
His absence exposes a calculated risk in Tuchel's squad management that has quickly turned problematic. The manager brought only three recognised full-backs to the tournament, leaving established European talent like Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold at home.
That gamble now relies entirely on Djed Spence. Tino Livramento has already returned to Europe with a calf problem, meaning two-thirds of the specialist full-back contingent are unavailable. James, Livramento and Spence all carried significant injury histories into the tournament, with James starting just 20 league games last season.
Tuchel defended his strategy, shifting the blame to misfortune rather than mismanagement. "No-one could see that coming," he said of James's latest setback. "Reece was in good shape and felt very good, so it's a bit unlucky but Ezri Konsa played in the position for us on a high level. We have still no problem."
England are guaranteed a place in the last 32 regardless of their final group position. However, James is understood to be a significant doubt for the start of the knockout stages next week.
To cover the right-back position, Tuchel must now turn to centre-halves Konsa and Jarell Quansah. Midfielder Nico O'Reilly and centre-back Dan Burn provide further auxiliary cover on the left, though neither is a natural full-back.
Tuchel maintained that the 26-year-old would return later in the tournament. "It's a minor hamstring issue," the German confirmed. "He's now on an accelerated rehabilitation programme and we take it game by game, but we strongly believe that he will be available."
The squad received more positive news regarding other key figures ahead of the Panama fixture. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson both returned to training on Friday after sitting out Thursday's session with calf and glute issues respectively.
Bukayo Saka is also available to start after being carefully managed off the bench in the opening two matches due to Achilles tendinitis. "Yes, I am [happy with my options at right-back]," Tuchel said. "I selected the team, so I'm very happy with everything with the characteristic of the players and strengths that they give us. We would love to have every single key player, we would love to have them available, it's not available — we find solutions, it's what we do. It's a tournament, we move on."
