Trump's Nvidia investment follows White House chip deal with China

Trump's Nvidia investment follows White House chip deal with China

A 927-page US financial disclosure reveals Donald Trump’s representatives invested millions in Nvidia shortly after the White House announced a major chip trade agreement with the company, a move with significant implications for transatlantic tech markets.

US President Donald Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure reveals that investors acting on his behalf bought between $5m and $25m in Nvidia stock in August. The purchase came just weeks after the White House announced a revenue-sharing agreement with the semiconductor giant regarding its sales to China.

Nvidia, which became the first publicly-traded firm to reach a $5tn valuation last October, is the central figure in the escalating technology and trade dispute between Washington and Beijing. In August, the Trump administration stated that Nvidia had agreed to pay 15% of the revenue generated from selling a specific AI chip into the Chinese market. Last summer, the company also agreed to invest billions in manufacturing its chips domestically in the US.

For European investors, the overlapping timelines of presidential policy and personal stock purchases warrant close attention. Nvidia's chips are the foundational hardware for artificial intelligence development across Europe, powering data centres and corporate tech strategies. When US trade policy dictates the terms of Nvidia's access to the Chinese market, it directly impacts the global revenue streams that European institutional investors rely on.

Trump maintained that his financial holdings are managed independently. "I don't get involved in my personal [finances], we have funds that run my money," he said on Wednesday. "I've made a lot of money before I became president, and they invest my money, and I don't talk to them."

The Nvidia trade was one of 21,285 share transactions executed by Trump's funds during 2025. The 927-page document, released by the US Office of Government Ethics, also shows the president made more than $1bn from cryptocurrency business dealings.

Beyond market trades, the filing details $86.5m in legal settlements from major media platforms. Meta paid $24.5m to settle a lawsuit over Trump's suspended accounts. YouTube paid $22m, while Paramount and ABC News each paid $16m. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey paid $8m. The document notes these settlements relate to account bans following the January 2021 Capitol riots.
