Theo Bleak, “We Will Not Be Lovers” (The Waterboys Cover)

This past December, Scottish musician Theo Bleak released her tender project Bargaining , which we named Album Of The Week . Today, she's returned with new music that pays homage to a legendary group led by a talented fellow Scot — her version of the Waterboys' "We Will Not Be Lovers" from 1988's Fisherman's Blues . It also comes with a video by Jacob Gandy. The post Theo Bleak – “We Will Not Be Lovers” (The Waterboys Cover) appeared first on Stereogum .

Bleak's version is a bit slower and sparser than the original. It feels slightly haunted by her croons. It's melancholic, yet bright like clouds bypassing a full moon. She shared some insight about why she choice this song and how she approached her rendition:

I adore this song, the urgency, chaos and flippancy of it. I can't help but relate its sound to the essence of a summer night on the east coast of Scotland, Mike Scott having been from Edinburgh. I wanted to recreate it whilst keeping the longing despondency of it. It makes me feel lonely but excited.
