Arsenal sign Spain defender Batlle on free transfer

Arsenal have signed Spain international Ona Batlle on a four-year deal with an option for a further year, following her departure from Barcelona. Arsenal secured Batlle through a pre-contract agreement signed earlier this year. This strategy is driven by Jodie Taylor, who was appointed as the club's first Women's technical director in January to revamp recruitment. The club now aims to plan ahead for the next three transfer windows to ensure a constant evolution of talent.

This forward-planning reflects the growing professional maturity of women's football, moving away from ad-hoc signings towards sustainable squad building. Arsenal won the 2025 Champions League but failed to properly challenge for the Women's Super League last season. That transitional period saw the departures of high-profile players including Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe and England international Beth Mead.

Batlle's arrival, alongside previously confirmed signings like England midfielder Georgia Stanway, Selina Cerci and Geraldine Reuteler, directly addresses this turnover.
