Erling Haaland’s rap track hits No. 1 in Norway after Kygo remix
“Does this mean I’m officially an artist now?”
Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has landed a number one single in his home country after Kygo reworked a rap track he recorded as a teenager.
‘Kygo Jo’ was originally recorded by the star player in 2016, alongside his Norway Under-17 teammates Erik Botheim and Erik Tobias Sandberg, who jokingly formed rap trio Flow Kingz.
In the accompanying music video, Haaland, performing under the name “Lyng”, can be seen pretending to use a grill, riding a child’s push-along car, and dancing in slow motion to the lo-fi tropical house track, which namedrops fellow Norwegian Kygo.
Kygo promised to drop a remix of the track if Haaland scored against Brazil, which he did in Norway’s 2-1 win last Sunday (5th July). The reworked version, featuring Haaland’s original vocals, was released on 7th July and has since shot to No. 1 on Spotify’s Norway Top 50 chart and gone viral on YouTube.
“Made it moment! Thanks, @kygomusic! Does this mean I’m officially an artist now?” Haaland wrote on Instagram.
Kygo responded in the comments: “Part time footballer, full time artist,” with the reply earning almost 150,000 likes.
Earlier this week, Kygo shared a behind-the-scenes look at the remix’s creation, while the original Flow Kingz track and new version can be heard below.
Haaland’s love of dance music is well documented, with the Manchester City forward famously revisiting Solomun’s legendary 2015 Boiler Room set on repeat. In a video from a recent training session, Haaland can be seen repeatedly singing the riff from Solomun’s ‘Tulum’ before pulling up the set on his phone to show the camera operator, saying it feels like there is a “nightclub in [his] head”.
During a 2020 Twitter AMA, Haaland said his alternative dream career would have been rapper or farmer. He has previously been spotted attending a Drake concert and meeting Travis Scott after a recent World Cup match, according to Complex .
Away from the football pitch, Haaland has become a much-loved pop culture phenomenon during FIFA World Cup 2026 thanks to his offbeat humour and candid social media presence . This weekend, he’s set to lead Norway in their highly anticipated clash with England in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
