Ninety-five-year-old William Shatner secures Riot Fest booking with elaborate rider

The 95-year-old actor will perform with a metal backing band at the Chicago festival, highlighting how live music promoters increasingly leverage viral stunt bookings to cut through a crowded entertainment market.

William Shatner, 95, is scheduled to perform at the Riot Fest music festival in Chicago this September. The actor will take the stage on Sunday, 20 September, backed by a metal ensemble featuring members of the Nuclear Messiah collective, including guitarist Marcus Nand and bassist Phil Soussan.

The booking is accompanied by an extensive performance rider that underscores the promotional value of unconventional festival programming. Specific requests include transportation in a DeLorean, an introductory video produced by the band GWAR, and the temporary renaming of a boat in his honor.

Backstage demands specify a dressing room designated as “Shatner’s Shag Shack”, four feet of Polish sausage, and eight pallets of Faygo soda explicitly reserved from sharing with the Insane Clown Posse. The list also calls for an assortment of adoptable puppies and a Montreal Canadiens hockey sweater autographed by John Stamos.

Festival Economics and Viral Marketing

For festival operators, such high-profile eccentricities serve as an effective marketing tool in a competitive live events sector. Riot Fest co-founder Mike “Riot Mike” Petryshyn noted that years of persistent letters finally compelled the actor to accept, admitting, “But that Shatner Rider… wasn’t expecting that today.”

Shatner framed the upcoming performance as a natural extension of his broader career. “I’ve always believed that music, like space, is about exploration,” he stated, promising that the festival appearance would deliver volume, intensity, and a few surprises for the fans.

The three-day event at Douglass Park runs from 18 to 20 September and features established acts including Tool, Morrissey, and Iggy Pop. Integrating a legacy television figure into this lineup demonstrates how promoters blend traditional rock billing with viral crossover appeal to drive audience engagement and ticket sales.

This live appearance directly aligns with Shatner’s ongoing commercial music ventures. He is currently recording a heavy metal album for Cleopatra Records, which will feature covers of Judas Priest classics with contributions from frontman Rob Halford and drummer Mikkey Dee.
