Canadian wildfire smoke forces widespread US concert cancellations
Deteriorating air quality from Canadian wildfires has forced the cancellation of multiple US outdoor concerts, highlighting the growing operational vulnerability of the summer live music sector to climate-driven disruptions.
Metal-pop artist Poppy missed her scheduled main stage performance at Michigan’s Upheaval Festival on Friday, July 17, leaving her band to play an instrumental set wearing N95 masks due to hazardous air quality from Canadian wildfires.
The no-show underscores a mounting logistical crisis for the North American live events industry. Outdoor festivals operate on tight margins and depend on full lineups to justify ticket prices and sponsorships. When acts cancel, promoters face immediate financial pressure and complex decisions about refunds. The scale of the smoke disruption is compounding these losses across the continent.
At Upheaval Festival, the Air Quality Index (AQI) surpassed 350 in the morning. While readings improved to "moderate" by the evening, the earlier hazardous conditions took their toll. Poppy's band took the main stage before headliners Gojira, performing without her while wearing N95 masks beneath their regular stage gear.
Poppy addressed the absence after the fact. "Due to 'hazardous' AQI reaching 350+ around our set time I was unable to join my band on stage. I was unable to breathe in those conditions. You might've noticed our set was instrumental only. For those who braved the conditions- I applaud you," she wrote on her Instagram Story.
The festival's crisis communication has drawn criticism. Early on Friday, organizers released a statement praising staff and claiming forecasts indicated the air quality would improve. Yet, when Poppy did not appear, the festival made no comment before or after the set and did not acknowledge the altered performance on its social media channels. Fans online expressed understanding regarding health risks but criticized the lack of advance warning.
The disruptions at Upheaval reflect a broader halt in US outdoor events. Michigan is under a statewide weekend alert advising residents to stay indoors. On Thursday alone, smoke forced concert cancellations by Mavis Staples in New York, the Black Keys in Chicago, and John Mellencamp in Clarkston, Michigan.
The Grand Rapids festival navigated additional operational hurdles as headliners Gojira performed with a fill-in drummer named Luigi substituting for Mario, who was sidelined by visa issues. With air quality forecasts predicting another drop to "unhealthy for sensitive groups" on Sunday, event organizers across the US remain on high alert.
