Chelsea funds record £117m Rogers deal through player sales

Chelsea funds record £117m Rogers deal through player sales

Chelsea is set to break its transfer record by paying Aston Villa £117m for Morgan Rogers, a deal that highlights how top European clubs are using aggressive asset trading to navigate the absence of Champions League revenue.

Chelsea are poised to sign attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m. The 23-year-old has agreed to a six-year contract and is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday. The fee would make him Chelsea’s record signing, surpassing the £115m paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023, and the most expensive English player ever, eclipsing the £116m Manchester City recently paid for Elliot Anderson.

The acquisition represents a remarkable capital gain for Aston Villa. The Midlands club signed Rogers from Middlesbrough in January 2024 for an initial £7m plus £8m in add-ons. Villa are now preparing to reinvest this windfall after a window that has already seen Youri Tielemans sold to Manchester United and Lucas Digne expected to join Paris Saint-Germain.

For Chelsea, the purchase signals a costly rebuild under manager Xabi Alonso following a disappointing season that left the club without European football. Arsenal had also expressed interest in the player this month, but Chelsea moved quickly to secure one of Alonso’s top targets. The deal demonstrates the club's willingness to spend heavily despite the absence of Champions League revenue.

To finance the move, Chelsea has effectively acted as a trading house, liquidating peripheral assets. The club bolstered its transfer budget by selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Andrey Santos to Manchester United. Further liquidity could arrive if Enzo Fernández, who has expressed a desire to leave, completes a transfer to Madrid.

Chelsea are already targeting further acquisitions with these incoming funds. The club is tracking Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and French defender Maxence Lacroix. Meanwhile, broader market activity remains intense, with Roma submitting a £39m offer to West Ham for Netherlands winger Crysencio Summerville, a player who also attracted interest from Chelsea, Villa, Manchester United and Fulham.

Rogers’s surging market value is rooted in his recent on-pitch output. He provided 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions last season, playing an instrumental role as Villa won the Europa League and secured Champions League qualification. He also featured prominently for England at the World Cup, starting on the right wing in the semi-final defeat by Argentina and creating the opening goal for Anthony Gordon.

Even clubs outside the elite European tier are leveraging their assets. West Ham, who were relegated to the Championship, have retained some negotiating power in the Summerville talks after Jarrod Bowen committed his future to the club.
