BBC signs three-time strongman Stoltman for Gladiators

BBC signs three-time strongman Stoltman for Gladiators

The BBC is betting on established sporting talent to anchor its primetime entertainment lineup, drafting three-time World's Strongest Man Tom Stoltman into the new series of Gladiators.

Three-time World's Strongest Man champion Tom Stoltman will trade professional athletics for television, joining the cast of the BBC’s Gladiators. The 32-year-old from the Scottish Highlands is transitioning into the broadcaster's entertainment division ahead of the upcoming series.

The BBC’s decision to sign Stoltman represents a targeted investment in human capital for a flagship media asset. As European public service broadcasters compete for audience retention against global streaming platforms, securing recognizable athletes provides a predictable draw for primetime schedules.

Production for the fourth series will begin in Sheffield next month. The show is scheduled to air on BBC One and the iPlayer streaming platform in 2027, positioning Stoltman's physical capabilities as a central selling point for the new season.

Stoltman’s shift to television follows a disrupted competitive calendar. He successfully defended his Britain's Strongest Man title for a fourth time in February, overcoming Adam Bishop and Paddy Haynes. However, a hand injury ended his 2026 World's Strongest Man campaign in the qualifying heats.

Since becoming the first Scot to win the world title in 2021, Stoltman has been a dominant figure in the sport, retaining the championship in 2022 and 2024. At 6ft 8in, his physical presence is expected to translate effectively to the Gladiators arena, though his specific stage name remains undisclosed.

Stoltman framed the move as a new professional challenge. "This is a dream opportunity and I'm incredibly proud to become a Gladiator. I've spent my life pushing myself to see what I can achieve and joining this incredible show is the next challenge."

He emphasised a broader motivational goal for the audience. "I'm excited to bring my strength, determination and personality to the arena but, most importantly, I want people watching to feel inspired to believe in themselves and take on their own challenges."

For the BBC, the casting aligns with a corporate strategy of leveraging cross-sector public figures to maximise the value of its rebooted franchises. Stoltman will now test his speed, strength and endurance against contenders rather than fellow professional strongmen.
