Kimi K3 signups paused as Chinese AI surge hits chip limits

Moonshot AI has halted registrations for its record-breaking Kimi K3 model due to computing constraints, a sign that China's low-cost AI challengers are increasingly straining both their own infrastructure and the pricing power of US tech giants.

Beijing-based Moonshot AI stopped accepting new users for its Kimi K3 model late on Sunday, just 48 hours after its public release. The company stated that surging interest had "pushed close to the limits" of its systems. Existing users retain access, but new registrations will only resume as the firm rolls out additional server capacity in batches.

The sudden overload underscores the competitive intensity of the global artificial intelligence sector. Kimi K3 is a 2.8 trillion-parameter system, making it the largest open-weight model ever released. Unlike the paid interfaces typical of US developers, open-weight models allow external programmers to inspect and adapt the underlying code, a factor driving rapid international adoption.

The model has already demonstrated formidable capabilities, topping the Arena leaderboard for front-end coding and outperforming established rivals like GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Fable 5 on certain benchmarks. Its success follows a broader wave of Chinese releases, including DeepSeek's V4 model, which earlier this year forced a market reckoning over China's ability to compete with US AI labs.

However, the pause highlights a persistent vulnerability for Chinese developers. Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at Omdia, pointed to the immediate cause of the outage. "This does show Moonshot AI does not have sufficient compute chips to serve the current surge in demand," he said. Su noted that K3 is unusually demanding in terms of computing power, making capacity allocation both difficult and expensive.

Market pressure and the sanction squeeze

For investors, the incident reinforces an emerging market dynamic. The release of Kimi K3 has already weighed on the shares of major US technology firms. The core concern is that a new generation
