Footage filmed moments before the team took the pitch shows captain Lionel Messi delivering a tense team talk, starkly contrasting with the squad's usual demeanour. In the clip, Messi is heard urging his players to stay calm, saying, "Calm, let’s stay calm, lads, let’s think about playing, nothing else. Stay calm. Let’s forget about everything, let’s forget about everything. Let’s focus on playing."
Supporters were quick to note the flat body language and worried expressions of a side that had been upbeat throughout the tournament. "As someone who’s not into conspiracy theories at all, I think this pep talk from Messi is really strange and completely anticlimactic. The worried faces and the low energy. This Argentina side isn’t like that. Unsettling," one user wrote on X. Another added that the team looked "flat, lifeless, beaten," suggesting "something was going on with a large part of the team."
The sombre mood aligns with post-match comments from coach Lionel Scaloni, who acknowledged there were unspecified incidents before the game. Scaloni declined to provide details "out of respect for the tournament," a vague explanation that immediately fuelled widespread speculation on social media. Unsubstantiated claims of match-fixing briefly circulated, though no official sources have corroborated those theories.
A more substantive theory has since emerged from journalist Eduardo Feinmann, host of El Noticiero. Feinmann reported that a rumour swept through the stadium shortly before kick-off that FBI agents were present to arrest Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia, the president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA). According to Feinmann, this claim reached the Argentine delegation and visibly unsettled the players ahead of the final.
The potential for law enforcement action highlights mounting legal pressures surrounding the AFA's leadership. Feinmann noted that Tapia is currently the subject of legal investigations in both Argentina and the United States. "I think some things are going to start coming out," Feinmann stated, suggesting the pre-match distraction could explain Messi's plea to "forget about everything" and focus solely on football.
Neither Messi, Scaloni, nor any member of the Argentine delegation has publicly clarified the captain's remarks or confirmed the FBI rumour. The AFA has also remained silent regarding the alleged investigations involving its president.
