Stade mass shooting suspect found dead in jail

The man accused of killing six people at a mothers' shelter in northern Germany was found dead in his single cell early on Tuesday. The Lower Saxony state justice ministry confirmed the death of the suspect, identified in German media as 45-year-old Fatih Khan G.

Authorities stated there are "currently no indications of third-party involvement" in his death. Jail staff made the discovery, and the ministry noted that both the suspect's relatives and the families of the victims had been notified.

The deaths mark one of the worst mass shootings in recent German history. On June 29, four women and two men were shot dead at the facility in the town of Stade. A seventh person was wounded but survived.

The suspect had arrived at the centre for a scheduled appointment regarding the future care of his three-month-old daughter. According to the local police chief, he suddenly produced a firearm and killed the child welfare workers "in a brutal manner." The infant and her 34-year-old mother were present but unharmed.

Prior to the massacre, the suspect had been accused of abusing the infant. Der Spiegel reported, citing unnamed sources, that doctors had found injuries consistent with the baby being shaken. The man had subsequently made threats against the medical staff treating his daughter.

A prior police investigation into those threats was ultimately dropped. For a country relying on an already strained social services sector, this failure to intercept a known threat before it culminated in a massacre raises urgent questions about the safeguards in place for state employees and public health workers.

Following the shootings, the suspect attempted to escape in a car driven by a 65-year-old woman who police said had "a close connection to the gunman's family." Officers fired on the vehicle during a short chase, but neither the suspect nor the driver was injured before his capture.
