If You Cannot Beat Obesity, at Least Lower Its Complications
If you cannot lose weight, do not give up. Regular exercise, real food, gut care, and stress management can slow aging and reduce obesity-related complications.
Obesity is not just about the number on the scale. It quietly messes with your daily life. You buy clothes, and they do not fit right. Socially, people treat you differently, even if they do not say it. You start avoiding gatherings because you do not want to be judged. Over time, your confidence fades. You feel less capable, less visible. But here is the real kicker: While society judges your appearance, your body is paying a much heavier price. Diabetes, heart disease, memory problems, even cancer, they all become more likely. So, it is not just about looking good. It is about staying alive and feeling like yourself again.
What ultimately causes obesity to kill us is comorbidity with other illnesses. Most of these health consequences are common to diseases that accompany us as we age, yet they occur before obese people reach old age. In other words, obesity accelerates the rate of aging and the onset of age-related diseases.
Obesity promotes aging across multiple tissues and organs [1]. Based on new findings, aging begins with changes in the form and function of cells. This cellular aging, called senescence, was first described by Hayflick and Moorhead in the 1960s. They found that normal cells have a finite lifespan. After this time, they do not die but lose their ability to function and divide. Additionally, they release certain harmful chemical compounds, most of which are inflammatory molecules. These chemicals act as an "eat me" signal, attracting immune cells to eliminate them.
However, if these aged cells accumulate for any reason, these compounds can transfer their aged characteristics to neighboring healthy cells. Due to this ability, these cells are called "zombie cells." Zombie cells can also transmit aging to immune cells. There is a Persian proverb that says, " To prevent everything from spoiling, salt can be added, but woe to the day when the salt itself spoils ." When the immune system ages, either due to chronological aging or through the transfer of aged cells, it is unable to remove these aged cells.
When we gain excessive weight due to overeating, the division of fat cells cannot keep up with the amount of synthesized fat that needs to be stored. So, they have to swell to create new capacity for storage of new fats. Swollen cells get stressed , and due to disruption of normal cell components and functions, they produce oxidative molecules that finally change them into aged cells. Immune cells are attracted to fat depots to eliminate these new zombie cells, but persistent overeating and excessive fat production overwhelm the immune system's battle, and ultimately the zombie cells win. This defeated army cannot remove zombie cells in other tissues, and the accumulation of aged cells accelerates the aging process throughout the body. Most struggles resulting from obesity come from complications associated with premature aging. Obesity speeds up nervous system , cardiovascular, pancreas, kidney, and immune system aging. Prolonged obesity even makes your appearance look more aged due to skin aging [2].
The most reasonable approach is straightforward: weight loss through proper diets and more physical activity, but always under a nutritionist's supervision. This is the smartest way to reduce the aging effects and other complications that come with obesity. The key is to take it slow and turn it into a lifestyle, not a temporary fix. But here's the problem: People are always in a hurry. They want to lose weight before a party or a wedding. So, they go on crash diets, drop the pounds, and then gain everything back right after the event. That rebound weight gain is the real nightmare.
If you are struggling with weight loss and have been unable to reach your ideal weight, falling into a cycle of weight loss and regain, the very least you can do is avoid behaviors that worsen obesity-related aging and comorbidities.
1. Exercise regularly. Include both cardio and resistance training. Regular exercise reduces obesity and aging-related complications, slows cellular senescence, and boosts your immune system. Do not feel embarrassed about your body at the gym. You can be overweight but still have fewer complications. And do not get too hung up on weight loss through exercise, working out is beneficial even without losing a single pound [3].
2. Avoid processed foods and fast food. These are packed with empty calories, harmful oils, and chemical additives that trigger inflammation. They speed up aging and make obesity-related diseases worse.
3. Take care of your gut microbiome . Eat plenty of vegetables and prebiotic-rich foods like almonds, bananas, whole grain wheat, corn, rye, and barley. These help good bacteria thrive, improve diet outcomes, and protect against obesity-related complications [4].
4. Reduce stress and anxiety . Modern life is full of chronic stress. Social media makes us feel like we're always falling behind, always missing out. We constantly want to matter. And obesity itself is a constant source of stress, what they call "food noise," that endless worry about calories and weight. Studies show stress speeds up cellular aging and pushes obesity toward dangerous complications. Managing stress and getting regular sleep can slow down these harmful processes at the cellular level [5].
Overall, obesity speeds up aging at the cellular and systemic level, and most of its complications come from this process. Losing weight and following some basic tips can help us manage these issues better.
