Wistron opens $700m Texas plant to mass-produce Nvidia superchips

Taiwanese supplier Wistron has opened a $700 million facility in Texas to build Nvidia's flagship AI chips, marking a decisive shift of advanced hardware assembly to the US.

Wistron has opened its first American factory in Fort Worth, Texas, a $700 million facility that is now mass-producing Nvidia’s GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra superchips. The plant held its grand opening on 21 July. Nvidia confirmed this is the first site in the United States to mass-produce its current flagship data centre chip.

The facility spans 324,000 sq ft and is designed to scale to tens of thousands of computing boards a month. Before breaking ground, Wistron modelled the entire plant as a digital twin using Nvidia’s Omniverse simulation software to test workflows virtually. This is a complex logistical challenge: Nvidia’s chief executive Jensen Huang described a single GB300 system as containing "one-and-a-half million parts inside, two tons, 4 million dollars."

For European policymakers and investors watching the global AI race, the Fort Worth plant is a concrete marker of how far the US has pulled ahead in physical infrastructure. While Europe continues to lobby for semiconductor fabrication plants, the US is successfully onshoring the final, highly complex assembly of AI hardware. Wistron’s shares surged in Taiwan on the news, underscoring that the financial gains of the AI boom are spreading to assemblers, not just chip designers.

The factory is not an isolated project. It follows Nvidia’s 2025 commitment to direct half a trillion dollars toward American manufacturing and AI infrastructure over four years. Texas has become the focal point for this build-out, aided by cheap land and power, including an $810 million data centre bond raise nearby.

Simon Lin, Wistron’s chairman, positioned the site as central to the company's future. "In the next couple of years, this location will be one of the most important, as we build AI infrastructure here in the United States," he said. The facility has already created over 500 jobs and is expected to employ 1,000 people by the end of the year.

The onshoring is already straining global component markets, tightening the supply of high-bandwidth memory essential for these superchips. Wistron now faces the task of rapidly scaling production through 2026 before retooling the plant for Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips. As Huang noted, "Manufacturing is an essential pillar for every economy and every country"—a reality the US is now acting on faster than its European rivals.
