Southern Brave open Hundred with eight-run win despite fielding errors

Southern Brave opened the 2026 women's Hundred with an eight-run victory over Welsh Fire at The Utilita Bowl on Wednesday. The comeback win provided the 2025 finalists with an immediate psychological advantage in the group stage.

The significance of an opening win in a fast-paced tournament was not lost on the hosts. England fast bowler Lauren Bell noted that securing early momentum is vital in a condensed competition.

Brave appeared to be in a commanding position after the first innings. Laura Wolvaardt anchored the batting with an unbeaten 45 off 36 deliveries, helping set a target of 127. However, Fire's Heather Graham kept the visitors in the contest with figures of 4-19.

Welsh Fire seized the initiative in the chase. Georgia Voll scored 52 from 39 deliveries, and Freya Kemp added 39 runs to leave the home side under pressure at 80-2 with 41 balls remaining.

Compounding Brave's difficulties was an erratic fielding performance that saw them drop seven catches, including a missed opportunity to dismiss Voll. "Hopefully we have got the drops out of the way early," Molineux told Sky Sports. "That happens. It's not a technical thing. It's just getting back into the swing of things."

Despite the errors, the captain retained belief in her squad's ability to force a breakthrough. "It was just to hang in there," Molineux said. "They were batting really well. They were going really hard, but we knew there were chances coming."

That shift in momentum arrived when Molineux dismissed Sophie Devine. Tilly Corteen-Coleman then removed Voll, who was caught by Maia Bouchier at long on. Bell accelerated the collapse by taking two wickets in three deliveries to dismiss Georgia Wareham and Em Arlott.

"I actually can't believe we got back into the game," Bell said. "Once we got the breakthrough and Devine gone, we knew that we were in the game. We had an end to bowl at and slowed Georgia Voll's game up."

Molineux and Corteen-Coleman closed out the innings to restrict Fire to 118 for eight. The competition continues on Thursday with a double-header at Lord's in London. London Spirit will face Manchester Super Giants in both the women's and men's fixtures.
