EU companies add 256,000 AI roles as old hiring tools fail
European employers are struggling to fill a surge in AI positions because automated CV screening systems can no longer distinguish between qualified candidates and those using AI to game their applications.
Companies across the EU posted more than 256,000 AI-related roles on LinkedIn between 2023 and 2026, with UK-based firms accounting for roughly 95,000 of them. This surge is breaking traditional recruitment methods. Applicant Tracking Systems, which scan CVs for keyword matches, are failing to identify genuine technical talent.
The issue is that candidates with AI skills are the most likely to use AI tools to optimise their applications. Over 60 percent of job seekers in the UK and US now use AI during the application process, according to Statista. “You often can't tell a strong candidate from a weak one; everyone looks great on paper,” says Constantin Michel, founder of recruitment platform Synmatch AI.
This bottleneck forces the burden onto hiring managers, who waste hours validating inflated CV claims. For the European economy, this inefficiency slows down the adoption of AI technologies by businesses. Companies are being forced to look beyond local talent pools and hire internationally to find the necessary expertise.
To solve this, HR executives are shifting toward AI-driven screening that tests demonstrated competency rather than claimed keywords. “Instead of asking someone to list a tech stack on a document, companies should get candidates to walk through what stack they’ve made, how they made it and the decisions they took along the way,” Michel says. “That's very hard to fake. If the keyword is just sitting on your CV, that falls apart in about 30 seconds.”
As talent dries up in established hubs like London and Berlin, European firms are expanding their search. “You can find good talent anywhere,” says Felix Steffens, CEO of HR platform WorkMotion. “But we’ve seen specific AI talent in Southern Europe, for example, but also in Egypt. Places people might not look to immediately.”
Hiring in unfamiliar markets introduces the risk of misinterpreting standard CVs, as recruiters do not know the local universities or employers. Platforms like Synmatch AI counter this by anonymising candidates, stripping out names and birthdays so managers see only the interview transcript. “That's how you make sure someone coming from a non-traditional path gets judged on capability and nothing else,” Michel says.
“AI skills adapt and change every few months, so measuring purely what someone knows is not enough,” Michel adds. Employers must test how candidates approach unfamiliar problems in real time, rather than relying on static CVs. For remote international teams, Steffens notes that output matters more than hours logged, and companies must prioritise continuous education. “I wouldn't bet on hiring people that are good at just one specific thing, because that might not be relevant in a year from now,” he says. “I would bet on people that are enthusiastic about learning.”
