Arsenal weigh free agent Stones against £60m Konsa

Arsenal are in the market for a centre-back after William Saliba suffered a back injury during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain. The 25-year-old will not require surgery but faces a lengthy rehabilitation period, forcing manager Mikel Arteta to pursue immediate reinforcements.

The North London club is weighing two markedly different transfer market strategies. On one side is John Stones, available as a free agent after his 10-year contract at Manchester City expired last month. On the other is Ezri Konsa, a more durable but expensive option valued at £60m by Aston Villa.

Stones presents a low-risk financial outlay but a high-risk physical asset. The 32-year-old won 17 trophies at City, including six Premier League titles, and proved his fitness at the recent World Cup with five appearances for England. Arteta is familiar with his attributes from their time together at City. "John is a player I really like," Arteta said in 2020. "I worked with him for many years. I know him well and when I look at centre-backs, he has many attributes that I like."

However, Stones' recent playing time suggests significant depreciation of his physical reliability. He managed only 439 Premier League minutes last season due to thigh, calf and muscular injuries, following 547 minutes the previous year. He never played more than 59 per cent of available Premier League minutes in a single season during his decade at City. Chelsea are also reportedly monitoring the free agent.

Konsa represents the opposite end of the spectrum. At 28, he is four years younger than Stones and has two years remaining on his Villa contract. His appeal lies in his robustness: he has made at least 33 Premier League starts in five consecutive seasons. According to Opta, he posted the highest ground-duel success rate of any outfield player in the Premier League last season at 73 per cent.

Bridging the gap between Arsenal's valuation and Villa's £60m asking price will be the primary obstacle. Both targets offer positional versatility, capable of operating at right-sided centre-back or right-back, directly covering Saliba's role. Arsenal have already bolstered their defensive assets by making Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent. The squad still retains Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, Cristhian Mosquera, Jurrien Timber and Ben White, though Timber is recovering from a groin issue and White has only just returned to training after a May knee injury.
