One person dies in attack at bank in Regensburg
One person has died following a suspected knife attack at a bank in the Bavarian city of Regensburg.
A 20-year-old suspect was arrested following a fatal knife attack in a Regensburg bank. The criminal investigation department is now searching for a motive.
On Thursday afternoon, an employee was stabbed with a knife and fatally injured in the bank branch in the west of Regensburg. Police said the attack happened at 2:50pm.
The 20-year-old suspect, who was arrested in the building about three hours after the attack, is also to be brought before the magistrate on Friday.
The suspect, who is German, is being investigated for homicide and robbery, as a spokeswoman for the Regensburg police headquarters said.
As of Friday morning the police said there was no new information to report at this time. The criminal investigation department was said to be searching for a motive, and hoped to clarify the incident on Friday afternoon.
The victim, an employee of the bank, was stabbed with a knife and critically injured. Emergency services only had visual contact with him for some time, until the scene was secured and he could receive aid. He died on the scene.
Security forces on scene had initially feared a hostage taking.
As of late Thursday afternoon, police had said they believed other people remained inside the building with the suspect.
After officers managed to get two people out of the bank unharmed, special forces went in and caught the suspect inside the building.
"We are currently assuming this is the work of a lone perpetrator," a police spokeswoman said.
During the course of events on Thursday, police had reported a major operation in place via social media channels.
"We have a large number of officers on the scene on Stromerstraße in Regensburg," police said on social media. "Please avoid the area and keep the access routes clear."
