Stripe backs TechCrunch startup competition to scout Australian tech talent

TechCrunch is bringing its Startup Battlefield competition to Sydney in partnership with Stripe, highlighting the growing institutional support for Asia-Pacific founders seeking global scale.

TechCrunch is bringing its Startup Battlefield competition to Australia, partnering with payments firm Stripe to identify promising early-stage companies. On August 19, eight local startups will pitch live at the Stripe Tour Sydney event in front of investors and the tech community.

The grand prize winner will receive $15,000 in Stripe fee credits and an automatic entry into the Startup Battlefield 200 at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 in San Francisco. Second and third place finalists will secure $5,000 and $2,000 in Stripe credits, respectively.

The evaluation panel features three figures deeply embedded in the regional and global technology sectors. Jasmine Liew, head of startup and investor partnerships for APAC at Stripe, will assess the commercial mechanics of the pitches.

She is joined by Brendan Hill, an angel investor and venture partner at Ten13, who evaluates teams through the lens of direct capital allocation. Jarron Aizen, founder and chief executive of Hapana, provides the perspective of a builder who has navigated the Australian market.

For European observers and investors, this event underscores the rapid formalisation of the Asia-Pacific startup pipeline. Major infrastructure providers are no longer just servicing these markets but actively curating their earliest stages to feed global talent pools.

The competition boasts a track record of launching more than 1,700 companies worldwide, including Dropbox, Cloudflare, Discord, and Trello. Collectively, these alumni have raised $32 billion and generated over 250 exits.

The model has previously yielded results in Sydney, where the former winner, HealthMatch, is now valued at over $25 million and serves a million patients globally. The August event will be hosted by Isabelle Johannessen, director of Startup Battlefield.

Beyond the financial credits, the primary value for these finalists lies in direct access to a network of operators and capital. As global tech competition intensifies, such structured launchpads ensure that promising regional innovations are rapidly integrated into international markets.
