Chelsea bets £117m on tactical fix for Alonso system
Chelsea have completed the £117m signing of Morgan Rogers to give new manager Xabi Alonso a physical, versatile solution to the man-marking tactics increasingly disrupting Europe's possession-heavy teams.
Chelsea have signed attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m. The transfer reunites him with Cole Palmer, a close friend and former Manchester City youth teammate with whom he won the FA Youth Cup in 2020.
"We've been speaking about this for a while - that we would always love to play together," Rogers said. "He's been non-stop ringing my phone, texting me, and I can't wait."
The hefty fee reflects not just Rogers' Premier League pedigree, but a calculated attempt to solve a specific tactical problem. Under Unai Emery at Villa, Rogers thrived in a counter-attacking system, using his pace, athleticism and right-footed ball-striking from the inside-left channel.
Alonso favours dominant possession, a stark contrast to Villa's approach. However, elite European football has seen a rise in aggressive man-to-man pressing, which can suffocate short-passing build-ups and render possession models ineffective.
Rogers offers a direct, physical answer to this trend. He can carry the ball over distance, win one-on-one duels, and receive long passes to bypass intense pressure. Alonso acknowledged the need for such pragmatism after his Leverkusen side lost the 2024 Europa League final to Atalanta, saying: "We probably tried to play too many passes in the first phase, when we should have tried to attract the first player and then go long a bit more."
Tactically, Rogers is expected to operate in the left number 10 role within Alonso's preferred 3-2-2-3 attacking shape. This requires width to come from a wing-back or an overlapping full-back. Most recently, Rogers demonstrated his adaptability by playing on the right wing for England against Argentina.
In possession, this structure places Rogers centrally alongside Palmer on the right, likely behind a striker like Joao Pedro. Rogers' ability to make penetrating runs in behind defences perfectly complements Palmer's playmaking from the edge of the box. Furthermore, Rogers' combination play and physicality support Alonso's demand for immediate counter-pressing if possession is lost.
For Chelsea, the £117m investment is a bet that Rogers' synergy with Palmer and his physical profile will translate successfully into Alonso's system. Whether deploying a back four or a back five, Alonso now has a versatile asset capable of adapting to shifting defensive structures.
