Chelsea breaks four-year transfer rule for £51m Lacroix

Chelsea has agreed a £51m transfer fee with Crystal Palace for defender Maxence Lacroix. The 26-year-old has given permission for the deal to be finalised. The agreement represents a deliberate shift in Chelsea's recruitment strategy.

Since the summer of 2022, Chelsea had refused to pay a transfer fee for any player aged 26 or older. This policy followed what Adam Bate described as the "ill-fated acquisitions of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly". "But Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix is a player worth relaxing the policy for," Bate noted.

The £51m outlay adds to a summer window where Chelsea has already committed over £214m to new signings. This spending is headlined by the £117m acquisition of Morgan Rogers. The club has generated roughly £130m in sales, including £51.8m from Marc Cucurella's move to Real Madrid.

Adding Lacroix will push Chelsea's net spend higher as the club continues to aggressively reshape its squad. The negotiations also involved complex asset management. Chelsea offered Palace the opportunity to sign one of their surplus defenders—Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah or Benoit Badiashile—during the talks.

This deal structure allows Palace to replace departing assets without an immediate cash outlay. It leverages a strong existing commercial relationship between the clubs, built on past transfers for players like Ben Chilwell and Chalobah. For Palace, selling Lacroix means offloading a player instrumental in their recent FA Cup and UEFA Conference League triumphs.

The Eagles have struggled to secure a replacement since selling Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January. They prepared to walk away from a deal for Augsburg's Chrislain Matsima due to slow negotiations. Toulouse's Charlie Cresswell and Lyon's Ruben Kluivert now feature as alternative targets.

Lacroix’s £51m valuation is underpinned by consistent athletic and defensive metrics. He ranks among the top five fastest centre-backs in the Premier League since arriving from Wolfsburg in 2024. He is also the only player in the division to have faced 50 or more one-on-one situations in the past two seasons and won the ball more often than not.

"I think he stepped up," said Oliver Glasner, who managed the defender in both Germany and England. Lacroix ranks third in the Premier League for clearances and seventh for aerial duels won. The data justifies Chelsea's willingness to break its long-standing transfer rule.
