Fury fights Wach in Thailand to protect Joshua mega-fight

Tyson Fury faces 46-year-old Polish veteran Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand, today in a deliberately low-risk outing designed to protect a highly anticipated and lucrative heavyweight showdown with British rival Anthony Joshua. Joshua fights Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. If both Britons navigate the weekend without incident, negotiations for their potential clash will gather momentum.

A defeat for Fury here would carry severe financial consequences, as noted by Sky Sports analyst Jack Wilkinson. It would damage Fury's credibility, pause negotiations, dent the valuation of the mega-fight and heighten the risk of the contest not happening at all. Wach represents a manageable threat, having lost seven of his last 10 fights, including a second-round knockout by Moses Itauma in July 2024.

For Fury, the objective is to gain valuable rounds and sharpen his timing while minimising the chances of an upset. The fight itself is not being broadcast on traditional television. It is taking place at the Max Muay Thai Stadium in front of approximately 1,500 spectators.

Instead, footage of the clash will be held for the third series of Fury's hit Netflix reality show, "At Home with the Furys". The arrangement turns a low-profile tune-up into a commercial asset for the streaming platform. Fury weighed in at 18st 13lb yesterday, 26lbs lighter than Wach's 20st 11lb.

It is the first time in 15 years that Fury has been lighter than his opponent, with the fighter declaring "I'm Mr Slim now" at the weigh-in. However, Joshua's camp remains sceptical about Fury's commitment to facing their man. Promoter Eddie Hearn questioned whether Fury would actually turn up, pointing to Fury's previous withdrawal from a Joshua fight due to an arbitration ruling involving Deontay Wilder.

"Can we say the same about Tyson Fury? No. That's the reality of the situation," Hearn said. Fury dismissed the doubt, stating he is entirely focused on the task at hand. "I'm there to box and move, use my attributes. I've got to be 100% focused, switched on, take nobody as an easy touch and do my job, like I always do," he said.
