Hearts agree near £1m record fee for Forest Green Rovers captain Laurent Mendy

Heart of Midlothian have signed 29-year-old midfielder Laurent Mendy from Forest Green Rovers on a three-year contract. The National League club stated the transfer could reach nearly £1m if all performance targets are met. This figure would represent a potential club record for the Gloucestershire-based outfit.

For lower-league football, such valuations highlight the growing economic viability of developing players outside the top tiers. Forest Green Rovers capitalized on their captain’s market value, securing a substantial financial return. He was a near ever-present for the squad, playing 47 times last season.

Forest Green manager Robbie Savage emphasized the mutual benefit of the transaction for both the player and the institution. He noted it was an "unbelievable opportunity" for Mendy, adding that he could not stand in the way of "progressing his career and bettering his and his family's life" while securing a record fee for the club.

Hearts, who finished second in the Scottish Premiership last season, identified Mendy as a standout performer during their scouting. The Edinburgh club highlighted his physical presence and tactical versatility as key assets. They noted his "ball-playing attributes allowed him to step forward and become an extra midfielder" when deployed at centre-half.

The transfer caps a notable ascent for the France-born player through the non-league system. He moved through the lower ranks of English football with Thamesmead Town, Greenwich Borough, Whyteleafe, Ashford United, Dartford and VCD Athletic. After a season in Sweden with Amal, he spent four seasons with Macclesfield before following Savage to Forest Green last year.

Forest Green finished seventh in the table last term, only missing out on promotion after a quarter-final defeat in the play-offs. Mendy’s departure leaves a leadership void in the squad, but the incoming capital provides a strategic advantage. The club can now reinvest these funds to strengthen their roster for future promotion campaigns.
