AIG Women's Open decides final Solheim Cup automatic spots
The final European qualifying spots for September's Solheim Cup will be decided this week at the AIG Women's Open, where double points and world ranking shifts leave several established players fighting for their places.
The AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes marks the final opportunity for golfers to secure automatic selection for Team Europe ahead of the September 2026 Solheim Cup. Eight roster spots are available through two distinct qualification pathways, with captain Anna Nordqvist naming her four captain's picks on Monday.
This week's major carries outsized weight for the continent's prospects because double Solheim Cup points are awarded to the top 20 finishers, while world ranking points are distributed to anyone making the cut. For players on the qualification bubble, a single strong round can determine whether they secure an automatic berth or force Nordqvist to use a discretionary pick on them.
Charley Hull has already locked up the first spot on the Ladies European Tour points list. The battle for the second and final points position is remarkably tight, with Chiara Tamburlini holding a slender 1.1-point lead over Helen Briem. Because only the top 20 on the leaderboard earn points, Briem must place inside the top 20 to overtake Tamburlini without claiming a top-two finish, while Agathe Laisne needs a top-12 result and Cara Gainer must place ninth or better.
The world rankings pathway offers six automatic places to the highest-ranked available Europeans. Lottie Woad, Maja Stark, Celine Boutier, Esther Henseleit, Carlota Ciganda and Linn Grant currently occupy those positions. Henseleit solidified her standing with a fourth-place finish at last week's ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open, lifting her to world number 43.
Breaking into the top 50 via the world rankings this week requires a near-flawless result. Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Leona Maguire are the closest European challengers at 63rd and 79th in the world respectively. However, both would need a major championship victory to realistically leapfrog the current top 50.
Nordqvist, currently ranked 124th, has firmly closed the door on selecting herself. "Thank you to everyone who believes in me and wanting me to pick myself for Solheim Cup. I'm humbled and it's been great to play alongside the European girls in this journey. I signed up to be the captain and I am very proud to be, so I will not be picking myself for the team," she posted on Instagram.
This leaves her four discretionary picks to potentially salvage the Solheim Cup hopes of established veterans. Emily Kristine Pedersen, Georgia Hall and Albane Valenzuela all featured on the 2024 team but will need Nordqvist to select them after failing to qualify automatically for this week's event.
Team USA will not finalise its roster until after the CPKC Women's Open on August 23. Nelly Korda currently leads the American automatic qualifiers, with captain Angela Stanford set to name her three remaining picks later that month.
