Marseille's Delta Festival ousts co-founder after abuse claims
The ousting of Delta Festival's president following volunteer testimonies underscores the operational and reputational risks European event organisers face when safeguarding crises emerge.
Olivier Ledot has been removed as co-founder and president of Marseille’s Delta Festival following allegations of sexual violence from multiple women who volunteered at the event. The decision was made ahead of the festival’s latest edition, which ran from July 23 to 26 at the Plages du Prado.
The allegations created immediate operational and commercial turbulence for the organisers. Dozens of artists pulled out of the event in the days leading up to the opening. High-profile acts such as Pegassi, Acid Arab and Mosimann were among those who cancelled their appearances, reducing a planned 200-strong line-up.
In response to the emerging crisis, Delta Festival’s management moved to isolate Ledot from the business. The organisation confirmed he was stripped of his operational management duties and formally banned from the festival site. An independent investigation has been initiated to examine the claims.
No official complaint has been filed with law enforcement regarding the allegations, according to French media outlet Le Berry Républicain. The initial reports detailing the volunteers' testimonies were published by Marsactu.
The festival issued a public statement on Instagram to manage the reputational fallout and reassure stakeholders. "We offer our unwavering and unconditional support to the victims of sexist and sexual violence and harassment," the statement read.
Organisers emphasised that duty of care remained their primary operational focus. "Our priority is the safety of everyone attending the festival. A festive event must remain a safe space for all – including employees, volunteers, partners, and you, the festivalgoers," Delta said. The company also established a dedicated email address to gather further information confidentially.
Ledot has firmly rejected the accusations. He stated that he was "outraged" by the festival's response. He further claimed the allegations were deliberately aimed at "damaging" his personal reputation and the commercial standing of the event he co-founded.
Despite the significant reputational damage and the loss of numerous performers, the Marseille festival opened its gates and operated over the weekend as scheduled. The episode illustrates the severe logistical and financial disruptions European event organisers face when internal safeguarding failures surface just before a major launch.
