Google expands Android age-assurance tools to counter global regulations
Google is rolling out a global age-verification tool for Android developers, a move that will reshape how European apps comply with intensifying child safety laws.
Google will make its Play Signal API available to Android developers worldwide by the end of 2026. The tool allows apps to identify younger users to provide age-appropriate experiences without collecting sensitive personal data like dates of birth. The system is already active in Brazil, with launches in Australia and Canada scheduled for mid-August.
The rollout directly answers mounting pressure from lawmakers and regulators around the world who are demanding app stores provide better protections for minors. For European developers, the technology offers a standardized method to navigate this shifting legal landscape. Instead of building bespoke verification systems, companies can tap into a centralized signal managed through Google’s Family Link dashboard.
Parents must actively opt in to share their child’s age range, ensuring the information is not transmitted by default. From a market perspective, the API reduces the compliance burden on smaller developers who might otherwise lack the resources to implement complex age checks. By handling the data through its own parent controls, Google shields developers from storing or processing the underlying personal information.
Google's announcement mirrors a similar move by Apple, which deployed its own global age-verification tools in February to comply with the growing number of age-verification laws. Adults can also use the Google feature to share their age when prompted, allowing businesses to customize user experiences without directly handling identification documents. This creates a uniform baseline for age assurance across the two dominant mobile operating systems.
The new API integrates with existing Google Play safety features that let developers prevent children from discovering their apps entirely. Parents retain broader oversight through the Family Link app, including the ability to set screen-time limits, approve downloads, and apply PIN-based content filters for specific applications. As legislative scrutiny of app stores deepens, these integrated safety tools are becoming operational necessities for the European app economy.
