Real Madrid close in on Rodri as transfer market shifts

Top European clubs are exploiting expiring contracts and structured payment terms to reshape their squads before the transfer window closes, highlighting the sector's ongoing focus on financial engineering.

Real Madrid are closing in on a deal to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri for between €40m and €50m. The 30-year-old Spain international has just one year remaining on his current contract, allowing Madrid to acquire a premier asset at a significant discount to his peak market value. A meeting scheduled for Thursday is expected to finalise the transfer.

In Italy, Juventus are employing a different financial structure to secure Randal Kolo Muani from Paris St-Germain. The French champions have agreed to a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy, with the total fee potentially reaching €50m once add-ons are triggered. This mechanism allows Juventus to spread the immediate financial impact across accounting periods while PSG moves a player off their wage bill.

The wider transfer market is demonstrating that selling clubs remain unwilling to accept below-valuation offers, even late in the window. Aston Villa saw a €30m bid for Palmeiras forward Allan rejected, while Nottingham Forest failed with a €20m offer for Israeli winger Anan Khalaili of Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. Crystal Palace have also seen negotiations for Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima stall over terms.

Established clubs are actively looking to monetise surplus academy talent to generate pure profit on their balance sheets. Manchester United are open to selling goalkeeper Radek Vitek, defender Harry Amass and midfielders Toby Collyer and Dan Gore. All four players are aged 22 or under, making their sales financially advantageous under European football's financial fair play regulations.

Mid-tier European clubs continue to cycle through squads to maintain competitive balance. Inter Milan are considering a move for Liverpool's Curtis Jones, though the potential free transfer signing of John Stones could block their separate pursuit of Cristian Romero. Brentford are close to signing Mamadou Sangare to replace Jordan Henderson, while Fulham are pursuing Real Madrid youngsters Cesar Palacios and Gonzalo Garcia.

Further down the football pyramid, Hull City are in talks to sign Leon Bailey from Aston Villa. Nottingham Forest are also structuring a complex deal to sign Gustavo Sa from Famalicao, with the immediate plan to loan the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder to Greek side Olympiacos. Ipswich Town are meanwhile eyeing Standard Liege defender Henry Lawrence.
