UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham vows economic overhaul and challenges London dominance

Andy Burnham has assumed the UK premiership, delivering his first speech outside 10 Downing Street with a promise to establish a new political and economic model. He told supporters he wants to "build a new national sense of unity, of common purpose and positivity", following a post-Brexit decade dominated by political division and Labour infighting.

For European investors and markets, the administration's stated goal of ending neoliberalism represents a profound structural shift. Burnham has explicitly identified the shareholders of privatised utilities and wealthy owners of under-taxed homes as beneficiaries of the old order who will face new regulatory and fiscal challenges under his tenure.

The new prime minister also intends to reduce London’s national dominance by focusing heavily on working class and non-metropolitan Britain. Burnham arrives in Westminster after serving nine years as mayor of Greater Manchester and previously as a junior minister in the Blair government. He recently opened a new administrative hub called No 10 North in Manchester, telling the crowd at the event, "I think this might be the best day of my life."

Despite his affable approach and a recent poll showing Labour ahead of Reform UK for the first time in 18 months, the administration faces immediate hostility. To execute this ambitious vision, Burnham has appointed John Healey as his new chancellor.
