Berlin documentary charts the revival of its historic electronic music parade
A new ARD documentary examines the transition from the original Love Parade to the modern Rave The Planet, highlighting how Berlin is rebuilding its massive street festival economy while navigating the strict public safety legacy of the 2010 Duisburg tragedy.
A new documentary premiering on German broadcaster ARD on July 31 examines the legacy of Berlin’s Love Parade and its modern successor, Rave The Planet. The film, titled Love Is Stronger: From Love Parade to Rave The Planet, utilizes previously unreleased footage to trace the event's trajectory from a massive cultural phenomenon to its tragic conclusion and eventual revival.
The original Love Parade operated in Berlin between 1989 and 2003, with a single subsequent edition in 2006. At its 1999 peak, the festival attracted approximately 1.5 million attendees, cementing its status as one of the most heavily attended electronic music events in history. This immense foot traffic established the city as a global hub for electronic music, creating a lucrative nightlife economy that continues to drive tourism and hospitality revenues across the German capital.
However, the unchecked expansion of the festival ended abruptly after a 2010 crowd crush in Duisburg claimed 21 lives. That disaster forced a fundamental restructuring of how Germany manages large-scale public gatherings. Municipalities and organizers were compelled to prioritize stringent crowd control and safety infrastructure over the free-flowing street parties of the previous decade, fundamentally altering the economics and logistics of European mega-events.
Love Is Stronger narrates this complex transition through the perspectives of organizers Ellen Dosch-Roeingh and Dr. Motte. The pair detail their efforts to resurrect the street party concept, which culminated in the inaugural Rave The Planet event in 2022.
The revival has not been without public friction. During the 2022 edition, Dr. Motte faced scrutiny after being filmed displaying a symbol associated with a German COVID conspiracy movement. He denied any affiliation with the group, stating he had "no idea how the sticker had gotten onto his parade float" and that he "didn't recognise the symbol."
The documentary arrives nearly two decades after the final Berlin iteration of the original parade. It sets the stage for the fifth Rave The Planet edition on August 15, which will operate under the theme of 'IMAGINE LOVE'. The successful execution of this upcoming event will serve as a critical test of Berlin's ability to sustainably manage mega-events in the modern economy.
