Trump reverses pledge on Ukraine Patriot production as US stockpiles fall
The US president has withdrawn a recent offer to share Patriot missile technology with Kyiv, signaling continued reliance on American manufacturing and highlighting severe depletion of Western air defense stockpiles.
Donald Trump has reversed a recent commitment to allow Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot air defense interceptors. Speaking at a cabinet meeting at Camp David, the US president stated that transferring the underlying technology remains off the table.
Just days earlier, Trump had suggested granting the license during a Nato summit in Turkey, a topic Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as productive during a Tuesday White House meeting. However, Trump told reporters: “We have not agreed to that. We’re talking about it, but it’s a hard thing to give away that kind of technology.”
The president warned of the risks associated with sharing such advanced capabilities, noting that the interceptor travels at 8,600 miles an hour. “People that you give that technology, they can some day turn on you,” he said, adding that the US will instead build domestic plants for Patriots and Tomahawk missiles.
This reversal underscores a critical vulnerability for European security planners, as Kyiv’s air defenses remain entirely dependent on American production. It also highlights the strain on the US defense industrial base, which is now pivoting heavily toward domestic replenishment rather than allied technology transfers.
For defense investors, the shift confirms a massive influx of capital into US manufacturing. The Center for Strategic and International Studies reports that two-thirds of the Pentagon’s Patriot interceptors have been expended, prompting a $58.6bn army contract with Lockheed Martin to rebuild supplies.
The White House has also requested tens of billions of dollars in additional emergency funding from Congress. This domestic focus suggests that European governments and defense contractors will face continued competition for limited interceptor components in the global market.
The Camp David meeting also touched on Washington's broader military commitments, including a five-month campaign against Iran. Trump claimed this operation has left Tehran without a navy or anti-aircraft capabilities, comparing the timeline favorably to past US wars.
Additionally, Trump announced an unconfirmed agreement for Hamas to disarm and Israeli forces to withdraw from Gaza. When pressed on the sequencing of the deal, he declined to specify and noted only that Washington had an understanding with Israel.
