Crystal Palace backs women's top-flight return amid potential majority sale

Crystal Palace Women have secured promotion to the top flight through strategic recruitment and full club integration, testing the owners' commitment to the women's game amid reports of a potential majority stake sale.

Crystal Palace Women return to the top flight for the 2026-27 season after securing promotion via a late surge in the second tier. The club's return tests its fully integrated operational model just as majority owners explore a potential sale of their combined 79 percent stake.

Unlike several rivals that operate as separate entities, the women's team has been fully absorbed into the main club structure since 2022. Investment has been driven by Woody Johnson, David Blitzer, Josh Harris, and Steve Parish, though June reports indicated the trio is seeking to offload their majority holding.

Manager Jo Potter has overseen a significant squad overhaul to ensure survival after the team finished bottom of the table in their previous top-flight campaign. The recruitment strategy includes securing veteran striker Bethany England, who brings 87 career top-flight goals, alongside French goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin on loan and defender Molly Bartrip.

The club also retained core players like Abbie Larkin and Ashleigh Weerden from their promotion-winning squad, which saw them win 12 of their final 14 second-tier matches. They added young attacking talent like Lexi Lloyd-Smith, though pre-season preparations were complicated by an anterior cruciate ligament injury to My Cato.

England highlighted the club's structural commitment upon her arrival, stating: “Palace are an ambitious club. They’ve been in the WSL before, they’ve had two amazing promotions now, and I think you can see their investment in the women’s game. They’re really pushing to want to be among the best, and they’ve got amazing facilities … It’s a place where I hope that I can make a lot of good memories, score a lot of goals, and make some good history for the football club.”

Off the pitch, the commercial strategy focuses on accessibility and fan engagement at Sutton United’s VBS Community Stadium, their home since the 2023-24 campaign. The club offers affordable pricing, a pre-match fan zone, and permits alcohol in the stands alongside a dedicated drink-free area to broaden their matchday appeal.

Select fixtures will be hosted at the main Selhurst Park ground, beginning with a September 20 match against Tottenham. Maintaining their strong second-tier home form, where they topped the lower division for points, will be critical for the club's top-flight survival.

Potter herself represents a strategic appointment, having won back-to-back cup doubles at Rangers and successfully integrated academy players into senior setups. Her experience as a player, which included winning the 2012 FA Cup and securing World Cup bronze with England, provides crucial leadership during this transitional phase.
