Airwallex valued at $11bn as investors back AI payments push

Cross-border payments firm Airwallex has secured $320 million at an $11 billion valuation, signalling strong investor appetite for financial infrastructure built around autonomous AI agents and hinting at a potential public listing.

Airwallex has raised $320 million in a Series H funding round, pushing its valuation to $11 billion. The figure represents a 38% increase from its $8 billion valuation just six months ago in December 2025.

The company, founded in Melbourne and now operating with dual headquarters in San Francisco, provides the underlying plumbing for cross-border money movement. As commerce becomes increasingly digital and international, this infrastructure has become highly valuable to institutional investors.

The new valuation is underpinned by rapid top-line expansion. As of March 2026, Airwallex reported $1.3 billion in annualised revenue, a 74% year-over-year increase. Its annualised transaction volume surged more than 120% over the same period to reach $287 billion.

Beyond the raw growth figures, the capital raise is squarely aimed at a specific technological shift: financial software run by AI agents. The company is betting that the future of commerce involves autonomous systems transacting on behalf of businesses and consumers, requiring payment rails built for software rather than humans.

To execute this vision, Airwallex plans to use the fresh capital to expand its regulatory footprint into new markets and heavily invest in its engineering teams. It paired the funding announcement with the release of T:0, an autonomous finance platform, and Airi, an agentic consumer wallet.

This pivot reflects a broader convergence across the fintech sector. Companies like Meow Technologies are similarly launching banking services designed specifically for AI agents. The narrative of agentic finance is currently driving significant capital allocation, even though the technology's ability to move money at the promised scale remains unproven.

For market observers, the most telling detail is the composition of Airwallex's investor base. The round was led by returning investor Addition, with participation from Hummingbird, QED Investors, Hedosophia, and Haun Ventures.

The presence of crossover funds such as Baillie Gifford and T. Rowe Price, alongside corporate venture arm Amex Ventures and Washington University in St. Louis, signals clear public-market ambitions. These investors typically take positions in late-stage private companies with the intention of following them into the public markets, suggesting the company is being readied for an eventual listing.

Airwallex has not signalled a formal timeline for an initial public offering. However, the fundraising highlights a stark reality for current tech valuations. Investor enthusiasm is highly selective: capital is aggressively lifting companies that can credibly align themselves with artificial intelligence, while crushing the valuations of legacy firms built before the ChatGPT era.
