Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in New Jersey to secure their second men's World Cup. The victory capped a tournament defined by defensive dominance, with Luis de la Fuente's side conceding just once in eight games. Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simon claimed the Golden Glove for his seven clean sheets, beaten only by Belgium's Charles de Ketelaere in the quarter-finals.
Nineteen-year-old Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsi was named Best Young Player after playing every minute of the campaign. He anchored a defence that restricted Argentina to just two shots in the final, with none on target. Cubarsi's emergence represents a significant asset appreciation for Barcelona's squad.
The individual accolades underscore the financial and sporting leverage held by Europe's top clubs on the international stage. Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the Golden Ball, adding to his 2023 Ballon d'Or and his Euro 2024 player of the tournament award. Despite Spain's institutional dominance, the tournament's scoring record belonged to France's Kylian Mbappé. The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward scored 10 goals in eight games to win the Golden Boot for a second consecutive tournament, a feat no player had previously achieved. He is now the men's World Cup all-time top scorer with 22 goals, one ahead of Messi.
Mbappé reached double figures in a single World Cup for the first time since West Germany's Gerd Müller in 1970. Only France's Just Fontaine, with 13 in 1958, and Hungary's Sandor Kocsis, with 11 in 1954, have scored more in a single tournament. "When you score that many goals in the World Cup, it certainly takes you to a whole new level," Mbappé said.
He scored twice in a 6-4 bronze-match defeat to England in Miami, having previously found the net against Senegal, Iraq, Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco. His record-breaking haul reinforces the long-term commercial value of Real Madrid's marquee asset.
Messi, 39, finished with eight goals and the Silver Ball after failing to find the net in the final. A hat-trick would have seen him retake the all-time scoring record. England's Jude Bellingham and Norway's Erling Haaland both finished with seven goals, followed by France's Ousmane Dembélé and England captain Harry Kane on six.
For Mbappé, the historical milestone offered little consolation for France finishing fourth. "I would have preferred not to be the top scorer and to have played in the final," he said. "It's good for my legacy once I've retired, but right now, that's not what's on my mind."
