ZDF censorship row erupts over cancelled Antifa song
Public broadcaster ZDF's last-minute cancellation of an anti-fascist song has sparked a national debate over artistic freedom and the limits of political speech as right-wing extremism reaches record levels in Germany.
German public broadcaster ZDF has sparked a fierce debate over artistic freedom after abruptly cancelling a performance by rapper Danger Dan and pianist Igor Levit. The musicians were set to perform their new track "Keine Angst" for the 100th episode of the political satire show "Die Anstalt," titled "Die ANTIFAnstalt." Instead, the song rocketed to the top of Germany's YouTube music charts after the artists decried the June 17 cancellation.
ZDF director Norbert Himmler defended the move, arguing the lyrics violated programming guidelines by endorsing political extremism. "In my view, the lyrics unquestionably provide instructions for a leftist resistance willing to use violence," he told the Süddeutsche Zeitung. The track functions as a manual for organizing leaderless, local groups to counter far-right movements, advocating strict operational security and the doxing of political opponents. It also expresses solidarity with individuals convicted of leading violent attacks on neo-Nazis.
The broadcaster's handling of the situation drew immediate criticism from its own ranks. Eight members of the ZDF Television Council published an open letter on netzpolitik.org arguing the network missed a crucial opportunity to discuss right-wing extremism and how to combat it. "Die Anstalt" hosts also condemned the decision, airing an empty stage with a piano before addressing the audience. "We simply consider ZDF's decision to be spineless — especially at a time when right-wing extremist violence has once again reached a record high in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany," said host Claus von Wagner.
This clash carries particular weight given the current political climate. The episode was specifically focused on the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is currently the country's most popular party. Civil rights groups are concurrently assessing the AfD for potential unconstitutionality and ban proceedings. The dispute highlights the tightrope German public institutions walk when addressing radical responses to a resurgent far right.
Himmler acknowledged missteps in the execution, if not the principle. "We can be faulted for the last-minute cancellation," he said. "We should have asked ourselves basic questions earlier — ideally before inviting the artists."
Both Danger Dan, real name Daniel Pongratz, and Levit have a history of blending music with political provocation. In 2021, the pair performed Danger Dan's hit "Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt" on another ZDF program, deliberately testing the boundaries between protected expression and defamatory speech. The duo held a substitute concert titled "Die keine Angststalt" on Tuesday at Berlin's Columbia Theater, streaming the event on YouTube and directing ticket proceeds to Opferperspektive, the central contact point in Brandenburg for victims of right-wing, racist and antisemitic violence.
