Bizzy B, UK hardcore pioneer and Brain Records founder, awarded honorary doctorate from University of Greenwich
The DJ and producer described receiving the award as “one of the proudest days of my life”
UK hardcore pioneer and Brain Records founder Bizzy B has been given an honorary doctorate by the University of Greenwich.
The award recognises his contribution to the UK’s underground electronic music scene over a career spanning nearly 40 years, alongside his continued work supporting its history and heritage through education and cultural initiatives.
The DJ and producer, whose real name is Brian Johnson, described receiving the award as “one of the proudest days of my life” in a post on Instagram .
He added: “I was deeply honoured to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Greenwich in recognition of my contribution to music and culture. This honour belongs not just to me, but to everyone I've worked with over the past 35 years. Thank you to the University, my family, friends, and the incredible community that made this journey possible.
“I never imagined this day would come, and it's something I’ll treasure forever... I’ll be sharing my full acceptance speech over the coming days for anyone who'd like to watch it.”
The honour follows the University of Greenwich’s previous recognition of Johnson’s work with the 2024 exhibition, Trackers & Breakbeats: Celebrating Brain Records’ Underground Revolution , which explored the legacy of the label, Johnson’s influence on UK hardcore and jungle, and Brain Records’ pioneering use of early computer technology in music production.
In recent years, Johnson has also focused on education through his TheBizzyBScience YouTube channel, where he has shared more than 1,000 videos exploring music production, technology, and the history of electronic music.
Last year, the University of Kent awarded an honorary doctorate to PinkPantheress for her contributions to popular music in recent years.
