RÜFÜS DU SOL just became the first electronic act to take a single tour past $100 million. Next stop: the studio.
Back in 2014, RÜFÜS DU SOL played a Toronto club that held 350 people. On September 5 this year, they were back in town to wrap up the Inhale / Exhale World Tour in front of 43,500 fans at a sold-out Rogers Centre. That one night brought in close to $5 million. Not a bad way to finish a tour that, according to Billboard, grossed $158 million, making it the biggest electronic tour on record and the first to crack nine figures.
The numbers only get bigger the closer you look. Over 18 months, Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George and James Hunt played 98 dates across four continents: 54 in the US and Canada, 21 in Europe, 13 in Oceania and 10 in Latin America. More than 1.7 million people showed up. The final North American leg was the biggest earner, pulling in $71.8 million from 693,000 tickets across 31 shows.
None of this came out of nowhere. By last December, the tour was already the highest-selling electronic tour of all time, earning the trio a commemorative plaque from Live Nation and Untitled after three sold-out hometown shows in Sydney. Their Australia and New Zealand dates sold more than 180,000 tickets on their own and set a new attendance record at Auckland’s Outer Fields at Western Springs. Somewhere in there, they also became the first electronic act to headline the Rose Bowl, and only the second Australian act ever to do it, after AC/DC.
Then came 2026. In June, they sold out four straight nights at Madison Square Garden, a first for an electronic act. August brought a five-night run at the Kia Forum, and they also turned baseball stadiums like Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, and San Diego’s Petco Park into giant open-air dance floors.
The fun part is who’s holding the record. In a scene where most headliners play from behind the decks, RÜFÜS DU SOL are a proper band, with Hunt on drums, George on synths, and Lindqvist on vocals. They already have a Grammy for ‘Alive’, and Inhale / Exhale picked up a Best Dance/Electronic Album nomination, but it’s the live show that got them here: long, slow-building arrangements, big production, and crowds singing along from the field to the top rows. A nice win for the live side of electronic music, and a good one to toast.
So what’s next? Time to recharge. On the Forum’s opening night, the band let fans know they’d be taking a proper break from touring to focus on new music, and they sounded pretty excited about it: “I can’t wait to share that with you, whatever that sounds like.” After the Toronto finale, they kept it simple on Instagram: “Toronto, what a way to end this tour.”
After 98 shows in 18 months, they’ve earned it. And when they come back with new music, the only record they’ll need to beat is their own.
