Man City secures Foden on four-year deal amid squad overhaul

Manchester City has secured the long-term future of Phil Foden, with the 26-year-old midfielder signing a new four-year contract that runs until 2030. The agreement commits a core academy product to the club during a period of major institutional transition.

Foden signed the deal last month despite a sharp decline in his production. After scoring 19 goals to earn the Professional Footballers' Association player of the year and the league's player of the season awards in 2023-24, he scored just 10 times last term. He has now failed to score in his past 31 appearances for club and country.

The contract provides City with continuity as it adjusts to the departure of Guardiola. Enzo Maresca, an Italian who previously worked in City's academy and as a first-team assistant, has replaced him. Maresca will take charge of his first match in Saturday's friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong.

City is also managing the exit of experienced assets, with captain Bernardo Silva and England defender John Stones leaving the club. Foden, who has made 369 appearances and won six Premier League titles, one Champions League and two FA Cups since his debut at 17, remains confident in the squad's viability.

"I think we can win everything, but it's obviously hard. We have still got an unbelievable team," Foden said.

The club is currently leveraging its Asian commercial presence, hosting a Puma away kit launch in Hong Kong. Foden missed Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 World Cup, where the team lost 2-1 to Argentina in the semi-finals, but stated he is now "fully fit" after overcoming off-field issues and an ankle injury.

Maresca indicated Foden remains central to his plans. "Phil is very important, like the rest. Knowing Phil from years ago, I know how good he is," Maresca said.
