Bradford City advanced to the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, defeating Championship side Burnley 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out following a goalless draw at Valley Parade. The victory extends a strong start to the campaign for the League One club, while compounding early-season frustrations for their higher-tier opponents.
The result highlights the challenges of squad rotation and fixture congestion for clubs competing across multiple competitions. Burnley head coach Nicky Hayen made nine changes to his starting lineup following a weekend league defeat at West Brom. Despite the heavy rotation, the Championship side struggled to break down a disciplined Bradford defense that had yet to concede a goal in their first three matches of the season.
Burnley controlled the early phases of the match and forced Bradford goalkeeper Jon McCracken into action. The home shot-stopper tipped over a strong drive from Connor Roberts and later stopped another effort from the defender from 25 yards. Bradford’s defense remained compact, with Reece Welch making a crucial intervention to deny Zeki Amdouni from close range.
The hosts grew into the game after the interval, creating opportunities against a rotated Burnley backline. Former Burnley midfielder Adam Phillips tested his old club, though he lifted an early cross from Jake Beesley over the crossbar. Burnley goalkeeper Gregoire Coudert was forced to make a save against Phillips, while Josh Laurent provided vital defensive cover by clearing a header from Macaulay Gillesphey off the line.
